Immigration as a skilled worker
This procedure is for individuals holding a higher education degree or a qualified vocational training qualification recognised in Germany. Obtaining a work contract is a frequent requirement.
Specification reviewed on
Required documents
The list below is exhaustive. Each document is described as it must be submitted, including the most common errors that lead to rejection.
Identity
Biometric passport photographs
Recent passport photographs compliant with biometric standards. Source 1 asks for one, while source 2 requires two. Source 2 specifies that digitally altered photographs are not accepted.
Common errors
- Non-compliant photographs (format, background, age) are a frequent reason for rejection.
Passport
Your passport must be signed and contain at least two completely blank pages. Validity requirements vary: source 1 requires a validity of at least 6 months after the intended date of entry into Germany, while source 2 requires a validity exceeding that of the requested visa by at least 3 months.
Common errors
- A passport with insufficient validity or which does not have enough blank pages will be rejected.
Copy of the passport data page
You must provide a simple photocopy of the identity page of your valid passport.
Common errors
- Failure to provide this copy may delay the processing of the case.
Proof of habitual residence
If you are submitting your application in a country of which you are not a national, you must prove that you reside there legally and habitually. Proof can be a valid residence permit or entry stamps in your passport.
Common errors
- The absence of proof of legal residence in the country where the application is submitted means the embassy does not have jurisdiction to process your case.
Resources
Employment contract (Arbeitsvertrag)
The employment contract must be signed by you and your employer. It must state the job description, the salary amount, the number of working hours and the job title. Source 2 specifies that it may be written in German or English.
Common errors
- An unsigned contract or one that does not contain all the required information (salary, position) is not admissible.
Declaration of employment relationship (Erklärung zum Beschäftigungsverhältnis)
This official form must be completed and signed by your future employer in Germany.
Common errors
- This document is mandatory and cannot be replaced by the employment contract alone.
Proof of old-age pension (for those over 45)
If you are 45 or older at the time of application, you must provide proof of adequate old-age pension provision. This requirement is waived if your gross annual salary is at least €55,770 (2026 threshold). This document is not required for EU Blue Card applicants.
Common errors
- Failure to provide this document if you are over 45 and your salary is below the threshold will result in a refusal.
Education
Proof of professional qualification
You must present the original of your diploma, certificate or proof of completion of training. This document must be legalised or apostilled. The originals will be returned to you after your application has been reviewed.
Common errors
- The absence of legalisation or an apostille on the original document is a ground for refusal.
Proof of comparability of the qualification
You must prove that your foreign qualification is recognised as equivalent to a German qualification. Provide one of the following documents: a printout from the ANABIN database for your qualification and your institution, a statement of comparability (Zeugnisbewertung) from the ZAB, or a notice of equivalence (Gleichwertigkeitsbescheid) from the competent recognition body.
Common errors
- A simple translation of the qualification is not sufficient. It is imperative to provide one of the listed official recognition documents.
Professional practice licence (Berufsausübungserlaubnis)
If you practise a regulated profession (e.g. in the medical field), you must provide the professional practice licence or the promise of being granted this licence, issued by the competent German authority.
Common errors
- Attempting to circumvent this requirement for a regulated profession leads to a systematic refusal.
Insurance
Proof of health insurance
German statutory health insurance only takes effect after you have settled in and started your employment. You must therefore take out private health insurance to cover the period between your arrival in Germany and the start of your employment contract.
Common errors
- The absence of cover for the initial period after arrival is a ground for refusal. Simple short-term travel insurance may be deemed insufficient.
Other documents
National visa application form (Antragsformular)
The form must be fully completed and signed. It includes the information declarations in accordance with § 54 and § 18 of the Residence Act (AufenthG). Source 2 specifies that the form must be completed in German or English, and that the case must be submitted in two copies (original and one copy).
Common errors
- An incomplete or unsigned form may lead to delays or a refusal.
Curriculum Vitae
An up-to-date CV, presented in chronological order. Source 1 specifies that it must be written in German or English.
Common errors
- A CV in a language other than German or English may not be accepted.
Translations of documents
All documents not issued in German must be accompanied by a certified translation into German. Source 2 also accepts translations into English. The passport data page is exempt from this requirement.
Common errors
- Uncertified or missing translations for essential documents (diplomas, civil status certificates) may lead to the rejection of the application.
Declaration for the EU Blue Card (Belehrung)
If you are applying for an EU Blue Card, you must complete and sign a specific information declaration under § 82 of the Residence Act (AufenthG).
Common errors
- Failure to provide this specific form for an EU Blue Card application will delay the procedure.
Have your situation reviewed
Having the list does not indicate whether your situation will lead to a successful outcome. The questionnaire takes a few minutes and an adviser will send you a written opinion within one working day, whether your application is admissible or not.
